Ministries: Outreach

Aside from daily person-to-person outreach, the people of Fifth Church are involved in several ongoing projects that aim to enhance the life of our community and the people in it. Hosting homeless families at our Greenhouse, giving Christmas gifts to urban children and building houses for people who cannot afford them are just some of the service activities to which we devote our time, talents and resources.

Interfaith Hospitality Network
We are one of 15 area churches that take turns serving both families that find themselves in between jobs and those that struggle with chronic unemployment. More than 70 Fifth volunteers help out each week by preparing the Greenhouse, cooking meals and spending recreational time with visiting families to the IHN day center at La Nueva Esperenza Church, where they get help seeking housing and employment. When? Fifth Church hosts the Interfaith Hospitality network January 13 - 19, April 27-   May 3, August 31-September 6 & November 16-22, 2008 at the Greenhouse. Contact: Sue Atkinson

Angel Tree
In partnership with The Clancy Street Ministries, the people of Fifth Church each Christmas season give gifts to urban children in need. On an Angel Tree in the church lobby hang the names of families, which Fifth families "adopt" and offer age-appropriate gifts. We deliver the presents to The Clancy Street Ministries in time for Christmas Day.

Grace Hunger Walk
Every spring, volunteers from Fifth Church take part in an annual hunger walk organized by the Grand Rapids Area Center for Ecumenism, or GRACE. Some of us pledge money and others walk in the event, which is a multi-denominational effort to raise funds for local food assistance programs and international agencies that deal with health and nutrition.

World Missions
Fifth Church provides funding and support for more than two dozen missions all over the world. Sponsored missionaries work on five continents in places such as Mali, Ecuador, India, Japan, Ukraine, Mexico and the United States. We also support Christian outreach groups such as Words of Hope and Jackson County Ministries, and provide prayer and finances for a variety of mission trips and events involving the people of Fifth.
